This is classic Apple in the post-iPhone era: money and market dominance no matter the cost. Fairly arrogant I think to assume that I have friends with iPhones, and that anyone would be happy to let me go through the faff of logging them out of their device to register my AirPods. Frustratingly, Apple Support didn't know that this wasn't possible, and after 3 (long) calls, lots of troubleshooting and even a replacement set of AirPods, Apple finally realised before telling me that I should "use a friend's iPhone" to register the device on Find My.
